After much hard work, and lots of good behaviour, the Galmi Day School celebrated Superhero Day. They came around to all of the houses to show off their costumes, and flex their superhero muscles for us. They had a fantastic morning, and finished the celebration with peanut butter chocolate chip and vanilla ice cream at Aunt Cindy's house. The superhero costumes were shed by 10am, due to rising heat, and sweaty bodies, but the excitement lasted all day long. Aunt Cindy was "A homeschooling mom in Niger". Note the diaper on her head (courtesy of Natalie) and the toilet paper roll (for potty training on the go), banana (for bargaining the best prices out of traders), stethoscope (just in case),a flower (for those random bad scents...) just to name a few...
Now Cindy warned us about this day at least a month ago, and I was relatively unconcerned because I knew Samuel had a black superhero cape with a silver lightning bolt sewn on (courtesy of the Brookens family, my parents' neighbors--another use for old prom dresses!!!). Last week, it occurred to me, that he might have a different idea of what he wanted to wear for Superhero Day. Well, naturally that was the case :( Thankfully I asked last week, and not this week Wednesday evening (the eve of Superhero day) I made a trip into the tailor (OK--several trips...including sending Alan once!)purchased the needed materials, and got to work. Thankfully, I had a picture of Mr. Incredible to go by, or the resemblance might have not been as close. Of course, it always takes longer than what one would guess, especially when you haven't made a supehero costume before, and don't have a pattern for it. Needless to say, some modifications to a pattern that I already have, and some trial and error (Note to self: NEVER EVER make gloves for a costume AGAIN!)brought about decent results. I will make sure in the future, to ask well in advance if there is a special dress up day, what his intended costume is, and get to work on it right away. After three late nights, I'm still recovering from sleep deficit. Oh well, it was worth it to see the excitement on his face!
