Ok, maybe I exaggerate just a bit, but really! I thought you would have to see it to believe it. There were a grand total of 5 kernels of corn on this entire ear! Not every ear was this bad, but this one certainly took the prize for pathetic-ness! Back in Michigan, corn just seems to grow well. At least my dad always managed to grow fantastic ears without much effort! Wiser, more experienced agricultralists (the Lau family) informed me that you should really go around and pollinate the ears, by shaking the pollen over the corn silk. Maybe the wind just blows more in Michigan?? To my knowledge my father never went around pollinating his ears of corn. But what do I know...Neither Alan nor I profess to have green thumbs (not a good credit to either sides of our family!) but one wouldn't think that we would have that much of a disastrous result! Can we blame it on bad rains this year?? Does it count that our gardener watered it for 2 hours every day except Sundays? It looked impressive. Tall stalks, big leaves. Just another reminder that appearances can be deceiving! Sometimes it is easy to worry more about outward appearances, than to concentrate on the inward state of our hearts. If we go through the right motions (like watering the corn, or going to church) but forget about the "pollinating" of our lives...that which will bear fruit...aren't we forgetting the most important part? May the Lord help us to 'pollinate' our lives with His Word, His truth, and prayer! May we share our 'pollen' generously with the "corn" that grows beside us, and may the fruit be abundant!
