The Galmi pharmacy is a vital part of the ministry here at Galmi. The hospital serves patients from all over the region. Surgery, Obstetrics, and Medical care are given daily. The hospital has the medicines on site, which is not usual for the country. One is usually given a prescription for medicine, IV solutions, and a family member or friend is expected to go to the local pharmacies and chase the items down. There hasn't been a pharmacist or pharmacy manager for 2 years here in Galmi, and Alan has a lot of catch-up to do. The stock is about 156 million CFA! The conversion rate for US dollars is about 430:1, and about 860:1 for the British pound--you can do the math! One of the challenges is ordering. The medicines have been kept up fairly well up to date, but the medical supplies is a challenge. Every day Alan has someone arriving at the pharmacy stating that they've just used the last of "item X" which they use every day. Oh, and could you get some more of "item Y" as we have only 2 left? It takes between one and five months to get most things...
